I often wonder what it would be like to put myself in another person’s shoes. Take Haiti for example. What would it be like if my entire life was destroyed? I’m now an orphan but no one knows or cares because there are too many things to worry about. We have to clean up the streets, find food and water, THEN maybe we can find me a family.
There is so much hate in this world. Wars. Wars that have lasted years. Wars that have lasted too long and for what? What are we fighting for? How can we kill each other each day through war, through murder, how can we hurt each other each day when events can occur that are out of our control like a massive earthquake that kills over 100,000 people. And we rush to their aid by raising money. We write on our facebook status to donate money to the red cross, we text our friends, we blog about it. We blog about how sad it is to live in a world where tragedies so great occur. But it won’t make a difference. Tomorrow we’ll wake up and we’ll still hate our math professor for the amount of homework he gives, or fight with our boyfriends or family members. Crimes will still be committed, feelings will be hurt, murder will still occur. Hatred will still be spread. I even found an article today titled “100,000 deaths in Haiti Hoax” relating the death toll in Haiti to the death toll in the Holocaust and how both are huge hoaxes. I don’t care that someone entirely uneducated wrote this article. If one person believes this, that means someone else does. What would it be like to live in a world where we don’t immediately assume the worst of someone? We don’t assume that we’re being lied to? How is it that we can ridicule one person who is in charge of an entire country for doing a poor job his first year in presidency. Why can’t we give each other slack, why can’t we realize that we are only human, and that you or I couldn’t do any better in their position. If an earthquake so terrible struck America that a large percentage of the population died, would you still be worrying about the ban on gay marriage? Or would things that truly make a difference in life finally matter. What would it be like to not wake up every morning and read news stories, blog updates, twitter updates, facebook statuses about how much you hate someone, how horrible they are at what they do, when a country miles away is grieving over their destroyed life.
What would it be like to live in a world where everyone loved each other?
